Panchgani is about a two hour drive from Pune, Wai the temple town is enroute and a good stop over if you feel like exploring a rustic township. From Mumbai to Panchgani you can either take the NH 17 upto Poladpur and take the ghat to Mahabaleshwar and continue to Panchgani or take the route via Pune, it will be slightly longer however better roads express highway till Pune and the 4 lane Pune - Satar highway will ensure a shorter driving time!
On the banks of the river Krishna is Wai, a temple town by all means. Wai about 80 Kms from Pune located on the way to Panchgani from Pune just after 'Surur phata' has seven ghats with each ghat boasting of more than one temple of significance.
If you are traveling to Panchgani from Mumbai and are taking the NH17 route there are two very good stop overs that you can choose from. The Pratapgad fort and craft village is located on a small detour just before reaching the queen of hills Mahabaleshwar. Pratapgad is known for its historic importance and the crafts village is also worth a visit. If you are traveling during monsoons the Ambenali waterfalls is also quite a spectacle. Mahabaleshwar is another obvious stop on the way.
Mumbai to Panchgani
Panchgani just a 100kms from Pune is at perfect distance rom Pune for a short break from Pune. From Pune to reach Panchgani one has to take the Pune-Satara highway and take the off road at Surur. From Mumbai one can reach Panchgani via Mahabaleshwar or the alternate option, first come to Pune and continue to Panchgani.
